Here's a suggestion that is tangential to the plants, but certainly
related. My entire yard is irrigated with drip irrigation (except for the
lawn), and it is all 1/4 inch tubing with in-line emitters, meaning that
the emitters are embedded inside the tubing. Basically, I have 1/4 inch
tubes snaking all over the yard. These lines need to be held in position,
and the irrigation companies sell what they call "staples" to hold down the
tubing. The staples are typically U shaped metal and add considerably to
teh cost of the system. I went to Home Depot and bought a package of 20
metal "ties" that you use to attach chain link fencing to posts. The ties
are aluminum, shaped like a candy-cane, and are perfect for holding down my
irrigation tubing. Cost: 30 ties for $2.50. I bet I've bought 1,000 of
them over the last year! Great deal!

So goes an old chinese proverb:
If you want to be happy for a few hours, get drunk;
If you want to be happy for a week-end get married;
If you want to be happy for a week, barbeque a pig;
If you want to be happy all your life long become a gardener
