My favorite economy is using 1 inch by 8 inch pieces of plastic
guttering or siding (easily cut with tin snips) as plant markers.  They
are tough enough to withstand a light stepping-on, and stay up above any
mulch in the wintertime.  (My children always called them tombstones).
