Re: Lenten Rose

Hellebores are not hard to grow from *fresh* seed. The problem is that
most seed you buy has been dry stored for some time. This means that you
have less chance of getting germination. For many of them, you will need
to give alternating periods of cold and heat to induce germination and
sometimes this can take a couple of years. I once, before I discovered
that fresh seed is better, bought seed of a lot of different kinds from
Chiltern. The only one that germinated was H. foetidus 'Wester Flisk',
from which I got quite a few plants, now seeding madly in the garden -- so
it is one of the easy ones.

They can also be divided, but unless you really need to increase your
specific plant, I don't recommend it because they don't like to be
disturbed. Beth Chatto, in one of her books, said that they dug theirs in
full bloom to divide for sale, removing all bloom stalks -- so, this may be
the best time to do it. I can't speak to this from experience because I've
never tried to divide mine. My Hellebore seed around quite a bit and you
can easily dig up some of the babies and move them to where you want them
or pot them on for a bit. However, Hellebores are not fond of pots, so it
is best to plant them out fairly quickly.
