One can never be too thin, too rich, or have enough books on the subject of
gardening.
Houttuynia (hoo-TIE-nee-uh) cordata is also called Chameleon Plant. It has
heart shaped leaves that are splotched and banded with green, white, pink,
and red. There's chartreuse and raspberry in the palette also. The plant is
stunning, if not garish to some people. Wayside catalog should have a good
picture of it.
An interesting footnote on this plant: it's edible! In fact, the flavor is
not unlike ginger. It's also one of the most toxic looking plants I have;
try serving it to that someone "special" whom you wouldn't mind if they
thought they were being poisoned. It can also be treated as a potted
aquatic or bog plant, with special emphasis on "potted". I've never seen
any insect or lovable-furry-critter damage on it, and it makes me wonder.
