CALLING PLANET EARTH..CALLING PLANET EARTH! Am I alone out here? Is
there anyone else on this planet who is still waiting for their Shasta
Daisies to bloom? I have tried everything. I have whispered gentle
words of encouragement, assuring them how welcome they are in the
neighborhood of my garden. I have lavishly praised their abundant
foliage and given a subtle hint that a little touch of white (in the
form of flowers) would only serve to enhance the lushness of their
green leaves. I have screamed, shouted, begged and cajoled..all to no
avail. Finally I resorted to threats. " How about a little drink of
Roundup or Finale!!" I have come menacingly close with my weed
whacker as I trimmed the edge of the border.
They have begun now to taunt me. Several days ago a tiny little
nubbin appeared. It looked like this little nubbin is THINKING about
MAYBE SOMEDAY turning into a flower bud. We're not talking here about
a dozen little nubbins that a clump of this size would merit.
No..just one, miserable nubbin that hasn't grown a fraction of an inch
in four days.
The only thing I haven't tried is bribery. I was thinking of
cramming a couple of double-stuff oreo cookies into the ground by the
roots. What do you think? Would these stubborn, recalcitrant little
stinkers do what they were put on this earth to do, which is bloom
with lovely white flowers. Believe me..their days are numbered. I'm
giving them two weeks and then they can enhance my compost heap. Am I
alone with this problem?
