White Moths

Fellow Gardeners,
I have many small 1" white moths in my
garden area. They seem to hang around the street
light mostly. I was told that they are bad for my
garden, that they eat foliage and that I should smash
them. Is this true? I have never noticed any problem
with them and don't want to do any unnecessary carnage.
What do you think?
