Slug bait

I may be a dunderhead, but I fail to see what the problem with slug
bait is. Everyone seems to avoid it like the plague. I had swiss
cheese hostas and after trying the beer traps and the applecore in the
bottom of the cottage cheese container, and the salt, I finally went
to the store and bought slug bait. End of problem. Now, reading my
posts, I feel like I've done something horrible by using the bait but
I don't know what it is!! Can someone enlighten me?
