It looks like coarse salt and you'll need to sprinkle it in a circle around
the plants that you don't want the slugs to bother. I doubt that it would
look appealing to your daughter, considering that she would have to also
eat the dirt to get to it. But to answer your question, I don't know the
effects it would have on humans. I would suspect that you'd have to ingest
an appreciable amount -- much more than you'd have to sprinkle around each
plant.
Remember that it's not a poison; these are merely crystals like the ones
found naturally in sand. The slugs do not eat it, just crawl over it. I
can't think of a more natural, non-toxic way to control slugs since
soft-bodied organisms are the only things that would be affected.
