chemical control until I get the bird in is to spray Liquid Sevin.<<

Laurie--
You are right about the birds. They are a great way to control insects! We
have lots of birds in our yard and have no serious insect problems and no
Japanese Beetles. We also have beneficial predator insects by the thousands.
One of the major reasons we have all of these wonderful garden friends is that
we don't use any pesticides. Most of our neighbors do. You can look in my
backyard at any time and see birds. If you look over the fence to the yard of
our neighbors who spray for pests, you rarely see any. It really makes a
difference. So if you do use the Sevin until the birds come, the birds may
never come. Sevin is hazardous to birds, too.

Not only do birds keep insects in check, they add the wonderful element of
sound to the garden. With bird songs, you garden can delight all five senses
- sight, smell, touch, taste & sound!

I wish I had an alternative for your problem "until the birds come" but I
haven't had any experience with Japanese Beetles. Perhaps someone else on the
list has some ideas. Good luck! --Janis
