fw: Japanese Beetles & Birds

>>>Subject: Japanese Beetles

                       Attracting birds
We also have a large variety of birds in our yard and due to lots of trees
and water
we always have had. We always kept the feeders full and enjoyed watching
them out the windows year-around. Then I noticed that they were spending a
great
deal of time at the feeders and not in the garden, so I stopped filling the
feeders.
Now they spend much of the day forgeing for food in the garden.
The bug damage in my garden is much less, this year, than in years past
and I've even seen birds pulling slugs from their hiding places ( another
reason why
I don't want to use slug bait ). I've not had trouble with Japanese Beetles
either
however, if I ever do and the birds don't take care of it, my garden comes
first and
I too would try something else.
I don't know much about birds and their habbits, but I think in the
future we'll only
feed them in the Winter.

>>>The ultimate control of Japanese Beetles is to encourage birds in your
>yard. They will eat the grubs that bear the beetles. However, the best
>chemical control until I get the bird in is to spray Liquid Sevin.<<

>You are right about the birds. They are a great way to control insects!
We
>have lots of birds in our yard and have no serious insect problems and no
>Japanese Beetles.
>So if you do use the Sevin until the birds come, the birds may
>never come. Sevin is hazardous to birds, too.
>Not only do birds keep insects in check, they add the wonderful element of
>sound to the garden. With bird songs, you garden can delight all five
senses
>- sight, smell, touch, taste & sound!
