Someone on the alpine gardening list suggested chicken grit as a slug
preventative. The grit is crushed granite and comes in 2 sizes. The
smaller is "grower grit". I don't have much of a slug problem (knock on
wood) and diatomaceous earth has worked fine. However, DE is the crushed
silicon shells of diatoms and although a natural product can be dangerous.
It will cut up eyes and mucus membranes just as easily as slug bodies (ever
gotten sand in your eyes?) If you are going to put down a lot, wait for a
still day or use one of those little paper masks.
