Just remember to keep the bark away from the base of the plants -- think of
it as a moat, you want to keep the mulch at least 6" away from the bases of
perennials (rule of thumb, you might need to keep it a bit further away).
The idea is to conserve soil moisture, but allow for air movement at the
base of the plant. In our southern cal gardens, mulch up against the base
of a plant is also a vector for pill bugs, slugs and other nasty bugs.
