Re: propagation of ...
Regarding gooseneck loostrife. I am not even addressing its reseeding
characteristics. I am talking about underground multiplication by those "chicken
feet". Mine multiplied in anything but totally dry, rock hard soil. The problem is
that if you try to uproot them by pulling them up, they break off & the underground
"feet" will send out more plants. But my plantings become so thick with additional
plants, that they must be thinned or they all become weak & do poorly. They are too
close together to hoe through, without hurting the plants you want to keep. And the
roots must come up or the plant will multiply, even if you cut or break the top off.
My main solution is to thoroughly water the clump, so the soil is moist down to at
least 6 inches. then the plants will usually pull up, roots & all. For the few that
still break, a hand weeder, slipped through the soil & underneath the roots, will
usually remove the roots with minimal disturbance to the other plants.
These plants wilt easily & quickly. If you plan to transplant them, keep them moist
& out of the sun, & replant them immediately.
Good Luck
