Plant detective, help identify this plant.

Hello:

Could some patient person with the tenacity
of a detective, help me identify a 'gift' plant
that I have growing in my garden.

I got this seedling four weeks ago, during a plant swap with
a neighbour who acquired it on her travels across Canada.
She didn't know the name, and I haven't been able to
find it using a web search. A name would help.

The most outstanding feature of this plant is that it is
all the same colour - both stem and leaves are an opague
burgundy, with leaf veins in a yellowish colour. There
is a pinky finger-thick central stem, from which sprout
two opposite leaves. New leaves grow in pairs,
arranged opposite the set of leaves below.

Another outstanding feature is the wide (about
2" wide), oval shape and dimpled texture of the leaves. When I
water the plant, fat droplets of water collect in these
'dimples' and will sit there undisturbed.

As of this morning, the plant is 8" tall - a fast grower in Zone 3 -
but has produced no flowers. I don't mind because it is
a colourful addition to my garden!

Sorry for the sketchy description. I know there are things I
should've mentioned but didn't, but I tried to keep it
to a minimum. Plant detectives can e-mail me with
specific questions.

Appreciate your help!
