Hi, Steve:
I've divided/transplanted during extremely hot spells during all of the
summer months and have suffered no losses except to my arm from dragging
hoses afterwards. In my experience, it works fine, but they may not look too
happy for awhile. I doubt if I'd
try it with those with resent being divided/transplanted at any time. Just
remember not to fertilize them.
At the moment, due to sewer and water installation, I've dug and moved
temporarily
3 buddleia and 2 new roses, so they'll get moved again in a couple of weeks,
during our hottest month in Chicago, and I'm expecting them to do well. The
Buddleia fainted immediately, but are okay now. The roses didn't bat an eye,
probably due to the fact that they haven't been in long enough to have put
out many roots.
Some things can actually be sheared or even severely pruned back and this
seems effective, such as my sedum that went into a deep swoon a few weeks
ago...coming up all over again and it looks wonderful. Moved/divided some
hosta at the same time
without any problems whatsoever.
Hope this helps.
