Thanks Pat - that was my idea as well.  I planted some sedum
seed at the same time as the sempervivum but it hasn't
germinated yet.  I've still got the pot of seeds, so if they
germinate next winter I can add them to the border.

Thanks to everybody else for their advice.  It seems as
though the consensus is to leave the soil as it is and I'll
have happier plants, so that's probably what I'll do.
