Echinacea paradoxa
Al,
The "yellow" purple coneflower is endemic to the Ozark mountains. I grew
mine from seed - believe I got seed from J.L. Hudson. I sited mine in
deep, rich river soil on a sloping bank. My seedlings bloomed the second
year and have made a spectacular show ever since. I imagine they would do
fine in your climate. If I recall correctly, Missouri/Arkansas' zone is
either 5 or 6. I was in Zone 7. I believe they prefer a shadier location
than E. purpurea.
They are easy from seed, requiring only stratification. I gave several
plants away. One friend who gardened totally in high shade was able to
flower this successfully. The main difference I noted was that the
paradoxa bloomed in late spring for me (early May) as opposed to purpurea,
which flowered in late June, early July.
I found this to be a very worthwhile plant. Give it rich, well-drained
soil and some shade and you should have no problems.
Best,
Julie Finn
