I find aphids to be very easily controlled using insecticidal soap.  
Insecticidal soap is environmentally safe and won't kill beneficial insects. 
Two brands, Safer and Concern, are readily available at garden centers in 
ready-to-use pump sprays.  Just spray the plant and the aphids die quickly.  
If you get them before they reproduce, that's the end of it.  As aphids have 
multiple generations a season, you may need to repeat the spraying if you 
don't get them in time.  Just spray them any time you see them and that 
should do the trick.  --Janis
