Somewhat north of you, Margot, we have normal to monster-size peonies. If
you are on light soil on Long Island the cause is more probably the long
summer droughts of the past three years. Peonies would suffer more on light
soils than growing here amongst the rocks, gravel and clay. The peony is
forming the next year's growth in the summer/fall before. Last summer was
utterly rainless and very hot through August.
