Here are a few drought resistant perennials that have worked for me.
Achillea millefolium (Yarrow - Be careful. It can take over.)
Artemisia schmidtiana (Silver Mound)
Iris germanica
Sedum (Stonecrop - any variety)
Sempervivum (Hens & Chicks)
I rarely water these plants and it's very dry here too. (The past week not
withstanding.)
Try to find a good book on Xeriscaping. My favourite is "Creating the
Prairie Xeriscape" by Sara Williams. It's published by the University of
Saskatchewan so it may not be available in the US.
