Re: Favorite sun loving perennials

Diana,

you may want to try heliopsis, which loves the heat and sun. Will take a
LOT of drought. I have that with echinops ritro. I also like the yarrow
that mingles well. It is a red variety that I picked up at a local nursery
whose tag just said "YARROW". I have no idea what it is, but it lasts a
long time in bloom.

Any rudbeckias last a long time in bloom. I have no problems with phlox
paniculata varieties in full sun. If you clip part of the clump in the
spring, you can get delayed blooms and it will appear that the plant has
been in bloom for a long time. This year 'Frans Schubert' is outstanding!
Just huge blooms and lots of them. Normally this is such a fickle variety,
depending on just the right conditions. It must like this year. 'David'
is another really good one. Always dependable.

Any coreopsis is long-blooming and sun-loving. I've had the white variety
as well as the pink (verticulatas). I don't like them nearly as much as
the yellows. They are floppy and unruly, even at only 12".

You will also want to include lilies. I'm tooting their horn because I
dearly love them and they will prosper even under brown thumbs. All love
sun with some shade at their feet from other perennials. While individual
flowers don't last a long time, a mature lily will have plenty of buds to
enjoy. If you plant asiatics, trumpets, and orientals, they will give you
a whole season of bloom with their staggered blooming periods.

Good luck!
