Hi Diann - iris are like daffodils - they use their foliage to support
the rhizome for next years bloom. Cutting it back too soon can result
in no bloom or a weak plant.
For daffs, I planted daylily in the middle of the clumps to daffs to
cover their wilted foliage. I have planted my iris behind other green
plants and interspersed some foxglove, dahlias and annuals.
I am also looking for something to pick up in june when the iris color
is gone.
I hate to give them up-last year I bought lots of unusual ones on ebay
and was rewarded this year with a plethora of brilliantly colored and
unusual iris.
