Claire,
Does it make a difference in the amount of vole damage you get if you plant
your bulbs deeper? Just wondering, because when I was attending an
international master gardener conference in Saskatoon, Sasketchewan 5 or 6
years back, there were lilies in bloom in every garden we visited. They
said winter lows could be minus 40 (I assume Fahrenheit) degrees and I
wondered aloud why the bulbs didn't freeze. They said they planted them 18"
deep. I can't say if voles go that deep because here in the city, I don't
have them (yet). There is no way on earth I could get my bulbs that deep in
this rocky clay. I do well to get a hole dug down to a foot (and I've got
the chipped shovels to prove it). Of course they have wonderful prairie
soil there on the plains.
