Claire's letter had so many different things to respond to.
I do grow both cleome and verbena bonariensis from seed every year, so I
know what they look like as seedlings, and I've been looking for them in
the gardens where I planted last year, but so far, nothing. I have
about six verbena b., and about 10 cleome seedlings, that I grew inside
until last week.
I find it fascinating that the bonariensis comes from Buenos Aires, but
not surprising that there it is a weed.

I used some potting soil that had been out in pots in the garden last
summer, and found that when the seeds I put in had sprouted, others also
had. Turns out I grew petunias and blue lobelia that way. There were
other seedlings also that I couldn't identify, until they got large
enough for me to see that they were weeds. Not as many as one might
have thought.
I had two different kinds of tomato seeds this year, and did they
succeed in growing into seedlings! I have so many you might think I was
in the business. Today I brought about 56 of them to the office, to
give them away. Next year I must remember not to put in all the seeds
in the packet. Does anyone know if this year's seeds will still be good
next year?
