Snakes can take care of themselves - they frighten me same as you. You have
to train yourself to leave them alone. Apparently it does not come
naturally.
The PG blooms in the north in late summer, half way or more through August.
It blooms on new wood so do your pruning in the spring, then leave alone.
There are dozens of new PG forms for those of us in the nasty north who
cannot grow the beautiful hydrangeas of the south. The new selections are
more attractibe than the species with one being almost, not quite, but almost
pink.
You can prune this shrub into a small tree, a bushy shrub or even a garden
perennial by slicing it off right to the soil line every spring. It is very
cooperative. Hydrangeas like water.
