RE: Favorite Salvia?

Hi Claire,
Yes I have visited his site and was on the Salvia email list for a time
where he is a regular contributor.
You might be interested in some of the species Salvias from eastern Europe
(maybe zone 4?) I grew from seed. They are budding and blooming for the
first time. Most have thick textured leaves and are standing nice and
straight without staking. One that is budding up now is pushing 41/2 ft.
tall and has leaves about 8" across x 10" long - nice dark green, heavily
textured. The flower buds are the size of juice glasses and still
enlarging! I can't wait to see what this puppy is going to do!
The hard part is that during the winter, the tags for much of what is in the
"hell strip" disappeared or were broken so I'm not sure which Salvias are
which. :( Eventually I should be able to match up them up with the little
ones that are still in nursery pots and are correctly labeled (assuming of
course that the seed was correctly labeled).
In past years I have done the same thing with species Campanulas and also
hardy Geraniums. It's a nice way to learn about the different species in a
particular genera.

So many seeds, so little space!

This is the site of Richard Dufresne who is the Salvia king of the internet.
I met him once in a nursery and he gave me some plants which he thought
might
be hardy in NY and so they have been. What they look like in bloom, I have
yet to see.

He can answer any question on Salvia.
