To this I would add that you can try many cuttings using PVCpipe cuts lined
up in a woden box or plastic square box. Fill the pipe pieces with a mix of
sand and peat and water from beneath, allowing the water to wick upward
keeping rot from occuring at the soil line. Using this method, you can do
dozens of cuttings allowing for the loss of a few and still get good plants.
You should have rooted plants by the end of summer which can be wintered over
in a frame. All that needs to be done is push the rooted plant out of the
pipe and no disturbance of the roots takes place. The pipe cuts can be quite
narrow allowing you to do many plants also allowing for the loss of a few not
worrying you.
I have had good luck, not 100% but pretty good, digging out suckers and
potting them.
Half hard wood is needed. Reduce leaf surface if the leaves are large by
cutting them in half. Don, as in all cuttings, put in shade for a few weeks
and then into part shade and pray over them. Cuttings from woody plants all
have there special requirements but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I am
working on Viburnums just now and they are easy. You might also try seed.
We have had one that produces a few seedlings now and then.
