This has been one of the best gardening season in several years. Our season
started off in February and then we were hit hard by a freeze the first week
of March. Plants that were emerging before this freeze took awhile longer to
reappear.
Now, everything is looking very good. Because of the March freeze, plants
are tamer in June than in the past couple of years...this helps the garden
develop much nicer in the long run. Plants are shaping themselves rather
than needing the assistance of me.
Blooms are everywhere---Canna's are up and blooming like mad....all colors,
yellow, orange, red, pink, pastel combos, etc. Thumbergia battiscombii is
putting out continuous blooms in mass--this is the first time ever that this
has happened for me. Some of my old Salvias have been blooming since late
March, others are budding and coming alive.
All my spring flowers are now gone. Two weeks ago I pulled out all the
Foxgloves and Larkspurs. Our spring was relatively mild and these plants
were out in full force this spring---a real show stopper.
Since I'm in Zone 9, the plants I grow are much different than many of these
ones that are growing north of me. I have Cassia's full of bloom and my
gingers have come out of dormancy and growing with a vengence. They should
be blooming very soon.
Again - it's been a very good year in the garden so far.
