Need Help

I have no good soil to grow plants in, but I bought some topsoil from Wal-mart
& planting Hosta. They do not seem to be doing very well. I also have
purchased a clemitis plant and a hibiscus. Now I do not know where or how to
plant them. They are still in the containers. Do they come back each year?
Should I plant them outside or leave in the containers on the patio? I love
flowers, but know nothing about them.
