Since I got a few questions here privately, planting sideway into rocks
meaning piling them up, artfully if you are artistic, and planting the plant
into a crevice that is off the ground and parallel to the ground. This
provides perfect drainage planting other things around the area or piling
around other rocks does it and it will ot look unnatural. I live where rocks
of all sizes are just lying about so finding them is easy.
Another way to grow these high drainage low rainfall plants is in concrete
blocks (those with spaces built in) if you can have concrete blocks in your
garden. The blocks provide the space and can be laid on their sides to give
the plants the conditions they need. A cheap and effective trough. If
having blocks around make you feel a bit tacky, know that all the best alpine
growers use them. I have seen groups of them in slides many times.
