Bill,
This is verrryyy interesting. Hmmm..... the only cisterns I have ever laid
eyes on were in Key West, Florida and seemed so very uhh - antique - but
necessary. Even Harry Truman's summer White House had an elaborate cistern.
As for the wild, wild West.....we are revving up for water wars that will
make the old range wars of the last century look like fun and games!

I've always been just a little afraid to ask where this water comes from.
When we looked into buying this place in 1989, we also explored getting
county water installed. The nearest connection is 1/4 mile away which would
have cost us $30,000. So we've learned to manage with a cistern, although it
means plants in the garden often have to make it on their own.
Managing a cistern is something of an art and I'm still working on mastering
it. We really don't have to pay to have it filled very often, as we have
lots
of roof surface that drains into it, if it ever rains again!
