Hi Duncan,
It looks a lot like an Acer pseudoplatanus cultivar. Was the
variegation white, or yellow? My laptop isn't displaying it well
enough to tell the difference. :)
My gut reaction is that it's Acer pseudoplatanus 'Variegatum'
(also known as 'Leopoldii'). It could be another cultivar like
'Nizetii' or 'Simon Louis Freres', but those are much less
common.
