*Perennials* Just a reminder - AVOIDING THE TICK

AVOIDING THE TICK

Lyme disease has a new distinction: It is now the most common
insect-spread disease in the United States; more than 17,000
cases were reported in 2001, with more cases expected this year.

Spread by deer ticks infected with the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi,
untreated Lyme disease can result in loss of memory, joint pain,
and arthritis. The first sign is often a telltale bulls-eye rash -- a
slowly expanding red area on the skin. Contact your physician if
you experience this or any of the symptoms of Lyme disease,
such as mild fever, rash, headache, or body aches. Most cases
can be cured with a quick round of antibiotics.

But don't let worry about tick bites ruin your summer fun. You can
outsmart the ticks by remaining alert to your surroundings and to
the local risk of Lyme disease. Such simple measures as wearing
long-sleeved shirts and long pants (tucked into your socks) can
help prevent tick bites. Be sure to avoid wooded and grassy areas,
particularly in regions where Lyme disease has been reported (the
Pacific coast, the Northeast, and the Midwest). And, as a
precaution, do a thorough body check for the tiny ticks when you
come inside.
