In addition, some plants prefer cooler weather and will die in the intense
heat of zone 10. While the Heat Zones are better to indicate this, there is
some correspondence between the USDA zones and the degree of summer heat
also.
I am sure our systems are totally confusing to someone in another country,
since we have the USDA zone (average cold temp), and the AHS Heat Zones, and
then the Sunset zones (used mostly in the Western US I believe). Your
confusion is understandable.
What type of zone system is there in Australia?

Some plants require cold weather to grow or bloom properly, for example many
daffodils and peonies. So if the hotter zone does not provide the low
(winter) temperatures required it is not sutiable for that plant.
