Hi Joanie,
They can spread, unfortunately. Sanitizing your tools can help. Try to
avoid brushing up against infected plants (I've heard they can transfer
this way). I may be paranoid, but if I have work to do in infected areas
I do those areas last. Then I make sure to wash my clothing before doing
any more work in other areas. This may sound like I don't do laundry
very often, but I have a pair of jeans and a T-shirt that are designated
as my gardening attire. Since I may only be out for an hour or two, I
don't always wash the clothes after every trip to the garden.

This site has recommendations, also. See the last paragraph under Signs
and also the info under Management.
They can also travel through the soil. :-(
Carefully remove infected leaves. Be careful when you do your fall
cleanup. I'm rereading the sites I sent you. There is some good info in
them for controlling them.
One site mentions a hot water dip. I've also heard about pouring boiling
water into the hole from where an infected plant has been removed.
The hosta world isn't happy that pesticides that worked on nematodes
have been taken off the market. Because of this nematodes are becoming
quite a problem. There is research going on to find something that will
work. Hopefully, a "cure" will be found, soon!
Below is a message to one of my other groups as to how he is helping to
control nematodes.
I can offer an alternative to risking losing a hosta to hot water
torture for nematode treatment. Try using a granular systemic
insecticide. Apply it around the plant and continue the following season
a few more times (and the following season also). It has done wonders
for myself and others. If you have nematodes they can easily spread 3-4'
in all directions in the course of one year (more water, more spread). I
have seen 10' in 2 years. I can comfortably say that I have them under
control.
disclaimer: These products are not labeled for use on nematodes as of yet.
