Paul, I'm late with my reply but I want to thank you very much for this info. I happen to have an easy way to protect this particular hosta next spring so your information is most interesting to me -- and something of which I was unaware. This puts my mind at ease about a virus. I am, however, keeping an eye on the Gold Standard.

Hi Alyce,

Frances Williams is notorius for burning. Just a sad fact of life with
FW. I don't think anyone knows why, just that most FW end up this way
They burn very early in the spring. What happens is that as the leaves come
out of the ground and unfold -- they are soft and thin without any waxy
covering. When the spring sun hits the leaves the first 2 weeks that they are
coming out of the ground they get sun burn.
As the leaves mature they do not burn. To prevent the burning one would have
to keep them away from any direct sun in early spring- say behind a building

You can grow FW when it is fully leafed out, in almost full sun with out it
burning (as long as they are not too dry)
