I don't recall which one we had in our display gardens years ago, but it had blue flowers.  It did well, but got much bigger than expected. Stems too long between nodes; I'd rather something more compact.  Someone took it home to divided it and it never came back.
 
Oh, here it is -

Clematis heracleifolia, Tube Clematis

 

I think Gene's C. fremontii would be a better choice.

Happy summer everyone! Difficult spring here, but things have settled down somewhat for now. How are all your gardens doing?

I need suggestions for a shrub clematis. Colour is optional, need something that will take a bit of shade, but good light in a north facing bed. Do any of you have a favourite(s)?

zone 5 currently, but they tell me this may change to a 6 in the next few years.
