what works for me in late summer are:
any of the Heuchera grown for the foiage like 'montrose ruby', chocolate
vail', chocolate ruffels', 'royal red' and pewter vail'.
The ornamental grasses are great for late season interest
the garden phlox = P.paniculata
Trictrtis hirta Aureo-maginata and any of the other toad lilies.--diffrent
and good for shady spots
sedum 'autum joy' great plant
Helianthus + the false sun flowers are bright and cheerful in late summer
fall
Helenium or the sneexe weeds are showy if not to tall--just cut back in july
for thick top growth in aug-sept
daylillies--- sevral late flowering forms-- i have a very tall one that
blooms from the end of Aug to october, it gets six feet tall in light shade.
Hosta-- many have showy flowers and have fragrent blooms too
Lobelia siphilitica-- great for blue color in the late summer garden
physostegia-- the obedient plants are great for the late color too--i have
many diffrent kinds-- so that i have some blooming from july to october.
Polygonum
Euatorium large but showy--get the new cultivores-- great plants!!
crocus- many late summer fall blooming species
cimcifuga
chrysopsis
chelone-- the turtle heads are fun some what tall and they like a moist but
not wet soil
anemone-- great for the lightly shaded area-- when nothing else is in bloom
Boltonia
anaphalis
allium tuberosum,
alcea
aconitum
