Re: Late Summer Interest

My favorite July/August perennials are the Gentians. Although they do
suffer during a heat wave, they are in bloom mostly July/August with
different species putting on a continuous show into November. Gentiana
septemfida "Everymans' gentian", paradoxa, freyiana, lagodechiana and
asclepidea are the easiest.
Gentiana triflora an makanoi need acid soil. Gentian scabbra starts as
early as mid September ending only as cold weather sets in.
It is at it's best just when you lose the rest of the garden to frost.
Not real easy from seed but possible. Very few nurseries sell them.
All the ferns have reached their full size
by July/August.
Lobelia cardinalis, Corydalis lutea, Erigeron glauca "Olga", Ipomopsis
are a few that come to mind.
