Thanks, all of you who sent info on O. missouriensis. Sounds worth trying.
The only thing that occurs to me now is: what about heavy rain? Do they
turn into a pile of wet yellow kleenex? Barb, you're probably closest to me
in terms of climate..Do yours survive thunderstorms?

Hmmm....why are you thinking about heavy rains right now?? ; )
They do get flattened, but they also will reopen if the thunderstorm is
gentle enough. Irises and daylilies and other up-facing flowers get
pummeled worse, in my experience. If you are worried, plant them in the
lee of something a bit taller that won't collapse under the rain.
