I don't know about latest trends, but in my neighborhood the most trite and
overworked landscape elements are azaleas as foundation plants (I love to
see them under trees, but not in front of brick houses); flowering
crabapples; forsythia; and flaming red salvias.

I do so love to see anything DIFFERENT.  For example, one house has a clump
of eremurus planted next to where a utility line runs from the pole to the
ground. That's different.  I also like to see Kousa dogwoods in bloom now,
well after all the regular ones are done (not that they aren't lovely, too).
