Today, Susan Underwood asked about the probability of variegated
Polemonium producing seed which would produce variegated plants.

I've been thinking about the problem since the Filipendula question
earlier. My response there was the biological one, and was adequately
correct.
But the practical answer is: Go ahead and give it a try. If your friends
would like a plant, seeds are not the only way to propagate Polemonium.
Buy the plant, propagate it, and take seed, too. There is a chance the
seedlings might be variegated.
I'm currently making interspecific Digitalis crosses by the dozen. None of
the crosses may actually work: interspecific hybridizations can be a bear
to get decent seed-set on. But you never get anywhere without trying. Oh
--- I can now tell that I have pod / fruit set --- but the pods can still
be empty. Or the seeds can be inviable. Or ...
Go for it!
Take a chance.
