Re: Bearded Iris problems

With Bearded Iris not all varieties are created equal. There are so many
hybrids (> 20,000) and not all will do well in a particular climate etc.. I
would compost the non-blooming ones and buy, beg or trade for different ones.
Just because yours are purple and your neighbors are purple does not mean they
are the same ones as your neighbors unless that was the source.

        Otherwise, non-bloom is caused by:
Over crowding (divide every three years)
Not enough sun (4-5 hours at your latitude is a MINIMUM)
                Too much Nitrogen
                Wrong Variety for area.

Although I have success growing many weird, wondering and certainly "more
tempermental" perennials, one that I have been having problems with is the
common run-of-the mill purple bearded iris.....I just can't them to bloom well
(or at all).
I have them in a sandy, well drained spot at the side of my house which rec'vs a
good 5 plus hours of hot, intensive sunlight each day. Lots of good foliage,
though no flowers. I don't fertilize them (except for maybe once in the spring)
and even tried dividing them a couple of years ago to no avail.
All my neighbours seem to grow them successfully in situations which very from
full sun to almost full shade. And while I really appreciate the foliage, I
would like to see at least a little flowering.
Anyone have any suggestions?
