Knautia macedonica

Brenda: The correct spelling is. Knautia, not Knautica and the
species name is macedonica.

The 2 vol. Random House Book of Perennials (the best reference guide
to species perennials, in my opinion) has a picture of it. This set of
books is superb as it is cover to cover pictures of perennials (most
photographed in the wild) with good descriptions and habitat
information (which of course, gives the best clues as to where to
plant in our own gardens). I own everything from Hortus III, Flora
Europa, Harkness Seedlist, Hardy Herbaceous Perennials (Jelitto &
Schacht-Timber) etc. etc. but I really think there is nothing to
compare with the Random House for its range of colour pictures. Re,
the pictures, what is also unique is that while most of the
encyclopedic types of books will give descriptions of many species
within a genus- you rarely get more than one picture of one species.
For example, I seem to recall the section on hardy geraniums has over
20 pages of pictures of different geranium species (something
certainly minimally necessary with genera as large as this).
