My favourite gardening books are both for specific purposes.  I've found both
very useful:

1. Peter McHoy, "The Small Garden Book", Acropolis Books
     -- an excellent book on design, techniques & plants for city spaces

2. Brenda Coyle (Editor), "Shade Gardens: A Harrowsmith Gardener's Guide",
     Firefly Books
     -- I especially like this one since it's for _Canadian_ gardens
