I'm sharing this with the list, having gotten several requests:
Hi Ann - hope your folks had fun - it was a lovely weekend!! I have two
wayside garden recommendations in my shady spots - which each get a couple
of hours of either very early or very late sun. Scarlet Meideland [red]
with a fairly wide spread - I think it eventually gets to 3-4' high and at
least as wide - is loaded with buds but not yet blooming. The Gruss An
Aachen [I forget what type this is] is "salmon" [mine seem to be very pale
pink] are already in bloom [as of last week] in the spot getting early
morning sun and in bud in the spot getting very short let afternoon sun - I
think they get a little smaller than the meideland [I seem to remember
planning the meideland to be in the back when I still had time to think
straight this past winter!] They are both supposed to be quite hardy, and
have a fairly long blooming period [they're not the type that bloom tons at
once and stop - sorry folks I don't have my rose lingo down at all!] The
Gruss An Aachen really brightens up the shady spot when its in bloom
because the flowers are so whitish - lovely! These were both in the
regular wayside garden spring catalog as well as the rose catalog they put
out - and I did speak to their horticulturist before ordering [I didn't
believe they really meant SHADE] - the other roses we got from them have
been doing great, except some mystery plants sent by accident which didn't
put out any leaves [can't complain when they're free :)] My mom has the
same roses in her wooded area in zone 6 and they're doing well there too -
sort of dappled shade with no direct sun at any time - all in bud there but
soon to open. Only thing I've really done for them is water well [soaker
hoses] and give them a small handful of organic fertilizer [pelleted
chicken manure etc] sometime in April. I'm finally going to get around to
the foliar spray thing this week - maybe they'll do even better! Enjoy all
- Cherie [Zone 7 Long Island NY]
