Depending on your zone, I always plant them
with mums, which take over the foliage/flower
show.

Oriental poppies do go thru their season fast
with ratty looking foliage
until they go dormant in mid summer. I like to
plant baby's breath or
perennial statice in front of them. By the time
they are fininished the
growth from their companions can cover them
up but not so heavily to
keep them from getting enough light. I'm sure if
I look, there would be
other plants that don't really get going until the
poppies have done
their thing.
