I have never had any luck wintering them over --Mass. zone 4--but I dig them up after the first light frosts, stick them in pots, and put the pots at the back of my unheated garage.  They stay very dormant all winter, and then in spring, they begin to grow and I unpot them, divide and put them in rows in the veg garden--by fall they are big again. I used to water about once a month in the garage, but I kept forgetting this winter, and it didn't seem to make any difference.  I've had some of them for years.   Judy Warner
