Vinca minor problem

I have to beds with vinca minor in them that I planted last spring.
They have really filled out and bloomed well this spring.
Unfortunately, both beds have sections that seem to be dying. The
leaves are turning dark brown or black and in some cases the stem has
turned black. Is this some kind of fungus, or is it a water problem
(like too much or too little)?

The majority of both beds still seems healthy. There is one section in
each that seems to have this problem, with a few odd vines elsewhere.
