Dowdeswell's thinks that darkness is not necessary! They did some
trials regarding darkness and temps and have the new info up at
http://www.delphinium.co.nz/Germination.htm (Thanks to Tom Clothier for
letting me know about this addition to Dowdeswell's site.)

These are the pages I use for seed germination info:
http://www.eskimo.com/~mcalpin/tm.html
http://www.anet-chi.com/~manytimes/page43.htm#b
http://www.anet-chi.com/~manytimes/page52.htm
There is also a seeds list that has a lot of knowledgeable and helpful
people on it. Info about that list and many other gardening lists is at

This worked well for me last year for Pizzcato poppies but we had an
*extremely* mild winter. I saved part of my Delphinium seed to try
this with this year. They hate the heat/love the cold and I thought
this might allow them to establish better before the summer heat. I
would be curious if anyone else from a cold climate has tried this?
Good luck with your seeds.
